Huercal Overa - A disappointing away day

This season, Total Football is focusing on Huercal Overa CDF - a club playing on the border of Almeria and Murcia, in the fourth tier in Spanish football.

There is a huge passion for the game in Spain, but we wanted to find out the real story behind a small club like Huercal Overa.

Huercal Overa director Lee Rickard-Graham reports on their most recent encounter which was a disappointing 2-0 away defeat to CDA Aguilas.

A trip down the coast

One of the shortest away days for Huercal Overa saw a trip down the coast to Aguilas in what was always going to be a tough encounter.

Aguilas reached the play-offs last season in the Tercera Division.

The task was going to be harder without star striker Tomas Campanas, who was serving a one-match ban.

The team lined up in a 4-3-3 formation with Sele, David Garcia and Rafa Soriano looking to give the home defence some problems.

Although they all had their chances, the final result meant there was a sense of disappointment at the final whistle for the Huercal Overa supporters.

Quick start

The game started quickly with both sides looking to get the early advantage and in the second minute, Sele elegantly whipped a corner in from the right-hand side that was met by Alex Minarro.

His header whistled only just past the post.

Aguilas also had their own chances in the first half but in reality, goalkeeper Michel was not really tested until the 22nd minute.

Strong play in the centre of midfield saw an opening on the right-hand side for Luky to fire a shot, which Michel got across to parry wide.

The match was finally balanced with Rafa Soriano coming close before the inerval. His dipping 30-yard effort only just cleared the crossbar, much to the relief of the home fans.

After the break, Aguilas started to take control, with a succession of corners and regular possession in the final third of the field.

Despite their lightning opening to the restart, nothing came of it and a couple of chances from Rafa and Sele for the visitors' went begging as both teams chased that elusive opening goal.

Diaz does the damage

It finally arrived with 17 minutes left to play and was one that could have been avoided.

A high ball through the middle of the field should have been dealt with easily by half-time substitute Findi. Unfortuantely, his miskick allowed Alex Diaz in.

Diaz took a touch and 10 yards out, slotted a shot past the blameless Michel to give Aguilas the lead.

Huercal Overa tried to get back into the game with some direct moves on both flanks but with some slack passing and crossing, nothing would come of the pressure.

The game was over as a contest with two minutes remaining, as Alex Diaz found himself unmarked in the box and duly drove a shot past the unimpressed Michel.

In truth, it was not a fantastic spectacle to watch for the 400 spectators, with Huercal Overa very light in the centre of the park.

This should be rectified for the next match when Mansour Seck and Campanas should be available for selection to face FC Jumilla.

Huercal Overa: Michel, Gabi, Moreno, Alex Minarro (Alfonso 83), Martos, Lloris, David, Heredia (Pardo 85), Rafa Soriano, Alex (Finidi 45), y Sele.
