Total Football Scout - Alex Oxlade Chamberlain

Total Football's Marcus Banks starts Total Football Scout - a new series of features focusing on the world's best young players - today.

Who are the world's hottest young talents?

Marcus will scour the globe to uncover some hidden gems, but starts with a player based in London who is already earning rave reviews and being tipped as a future top player for his country. There hasn't been this much excitement about a young player in England since that famous "remember the name" line about Wayne Rooney.

NAME: ALEX OXLADE CHAMBERLAIN

POSITON: WINGER/MIDFIELDER

AGE: 18

CLUB: ARSENAL

SQUAD NUMBER: 15

NATIONALITY: ENGLISH

HEIGHT: 5’ 11"

WEIGHT: 70 KG

MARKET VALUE: £8,000,000

HE’S A BIT LIKE: HULK

Following some outstanding seasons in the Football League with Southampton, he followed in the footsteps of Theo Walcott and Gareth Bale in making the step up to the Premier League. Chamberlain joined Arsenal from the Saints for £12 million a week before the start of the 2011/2012 season.

Chamberlain netted his first goal for the Gunners against Shrewsbury in the League Cup with a spectacular drive from 25 yards. He also scored on his Champions League debut against Olympiakos after latching onto an Alex Song pass before beating several defenders before finishing in the corner of the net. In doing so he became the youngest ever Englishman to score in the Champions League taking over from fellow team-mate Theo Walcott.

The 18 year old started his first league game for Arsenal in the 2-1 defeat to Manchester United were he contributed an assist for Robin Van Persie to score Arsenal’s only goal. He was later replaced by Andrei Arshavin and Arsenal fans heavily booed Arsene Wenger for replacing Oxlade-Chamberlain. To continue his rich vein of form, Chamberlain scored his first two Premier League goals against Blackburn Rovers at the Emirates which they went on the win 7-1.

Chamberlain is fast and confident on the ball and has an eye for goal. He has a good footballing brain and likes to run at his man. Sometimes he can lack concentration and his youthful exuberance can also get the best of him. However if his progress continues he will surely be an England and Arsenal regular for years to come.
