Most Wanted: Edinson Cavani

A new feature on Total Football is Most Wanted. The series will feature some of the most targeted players around the world. Many clubs are hoping to strengthen their squad this summer once the window re-opens but who are they aiming for? The first is Napoli striker Edinson Cavani who is third in Serie A’s goal-scoring charts.

AGE: 25

MARKET VALUE: £24,500,000

Edinson Cavani is quickly becoming one of the hottest strikers on the planet. The Napoli hit-man is blitzing Serie A combining with team-mates Marek Hamsik and Ezequiel Lavezzi.

Cavani scored against Manchester City in Napoli’s opening Champions League before netting a sensational hat-trick against AC Milan just four days later. Cavani then added further injury to City after scoring a brace in the return leg. The Uruguayan then scored a 94th minute equaliser against Atlanta and scored another two in the 6-1 thrashing of Genoa. He also scored two goals against Lecce and Champions League rivals Inter.

The 25 year old then scored two against Fiorentina to help his side over-take Inter Milan. He was instrumental in the 3-1 win against Chelsea assisting Lavezzi twice before bagging one himself. Following their exit from the competition, he scored a much needed two goals against Udinese to earn a draw before scoring a fantastic counter-attack goal against Siena.

His Napoli record is 61 goals in 86 appearances and he has attracted the intention of many of the world’s elite clubs. Manchester City are contemplating a bid for both Cavani and Hamsik with Carlos Tevez and Edin Dzeko set to leave Eastlands. Mario Balotelli and Emmanuel Adebayor are seemingly on the verge of an exit while Roque Santa Cruz is surplus to requirements. Cavani has already proved his worth against Mancini’s men after dumping them out of the Champions League.

Liverpool want Cavani to link up with international team-mate Luis Suarez as they have struggled for goals this season. £35 million man Andy Carroll has failed to make an impact this season and could head for an early exit. Dirk Kuyt could be moved on and if FSG are willing to provide funds for this transfer; it could bring instant results. However after a poor season, Cavani may not be interested in a team without Champions League football and opt for other options.

Roman Abramovich has money to burn and could be willing to invest in the transfer of Cavani as Didier Drogba’s contract is set to expire. Daniel Sturridge has widely impressed this season while Fernando Torres finally seems to be picking up form. Cavani would only boost their squad while Juventus and Real Madrid are also monitoring his situation.

Cavani is a strong powerful forward who is a commanding presence up-front who can head and hold the ball up. He contributes to the defence and is a natural predator in the box.
