Total Football Scout - Marc-Andre ter Stegen

This Total Football Scout draws attention to the sensational young German goalkeeper, Marc-Andre ter Stegen. The confident star of Borussia Monchengladbach's surprise push for the Bundesliga title has conceded just 14 goals in 23 games this season, but is yet to represent Germany at senior or Under-21 level.

Total Football's Marcus Banks finds out whether there is any truth to the rumours that ter Stegen is the 'new Oliver Kahn'.

NAME: MARC-ANDRE TER STEGEN

POSITION: GOALKEEPER

AGE: 19

CLUB: BORUSSIA MONCHENGLADBACH

SQUAD NUMBER: 1

NATIONALITY: GERMAN

HEIGHT: 6’ 2”

WEIGHT: 85 KG

MARKET VALUE: £6,600,000

HE’S A BIT LIKE: OLIVER KAHN

In the first half of the 2010/11 season, ter Stegen established himself as the star of Monchengladbach’s reserve team and was frequently on the first team bench. Whilst he enjoyed his own personal success, the same could not be said of his first team colleagues. Monchengladbach were struggling in their efforts to survive in the Bundesliga and in February 2011, manager Michael Frontzeck was replaced by Lucien Favre as Die Fohlen sat bottom of the table.

Results improved but some erratic performances from goalkeeper Logan Bailly seemed to hold them back. Although Bailly produced some excellent games, his other appearances seemed uninspiring. The fans were quick to discredit the Belgium international and ter Stegen’s showing had not gone unnoticed, forcing the new manager to listen to the fans' demands to drop Bailly.

The 19-year-old German started against FC Koln in April and he did not disappoint. Borussia’s defence boasted a previously unseen solidarity. He retained his place for the remaining games and kept four clean sheets out of a possible five. The German helped them survive via the play-offs and he shot to prominence with an outstanding display against champions Borussia Dortmund making a string of exquisite saves in a famous 1-0 victory.

Ter Stegen’s first team slot was cemented as Bailly was sent out on loan and the youngster was handed the number one jersey. When Bayern Munich finally succeeded in their long pursuit of Manuel Neuer, the former Schalke keeper started his first game against ter Stegen’s Monchengladbach. However, pundits were deceived as the youngster outshone Germany’s first choice goalkeeper and produced yet another inspired display, Neuer’s mistake giving Borussia a 1-0 win.

Building momentum, Monchengladbach embarked on an unlikely title challenge with Marco Reus and the so-called 'new Oliver Kahn’ leading the way. Performing at such a high level at such a young age is already a sign that ter Stegen is already on his way to the top.
