Total Football Scout - Xherdan Shaqiri

Xherdan Shaqiri is the next hot prospect in Total Football Scout. Following Cristian Tello, Shaqiri is quickly becoming one of Europe's best young players and has secured a transfer to one of the world's biggest clubs. But what is all the hype about?

NAME: XHERDAN SHAQIRI

POSITION: RIGHT MIDFIELDER

AGE: 20

CLUB: BAYERN MUNICH (PRE-TRANSFER AGREEMENT FROM FC BASEL)

SQUAD NUMBER: 17

NATIONALITY: SWITZERLAND

HEIGHT: 5’ 6”

WEIGHT: 72 kg

MARKET VALUE: £11,000,000

HE’S A BIT LIKE: FRANCK RIBERY

Shaqiri began his career at SV Augst and FC Basel’s youth academies and he was named best player of the U15 Nike Cup tournament for Basel. Despite different other clubs in Europe wanting to sign him, he stayed with Basel and signed a professional contract with the Swiss side in January 2009.

His first goal of the season was against Sion in the 3-3 draw and he also scored in the 6-0 drumming of Lausanne in September. Shaqiri scored the only goal of the game against FC Zurich to give his side the win and helped his side to a 4-1 win against Grasshoppers scoring one goal.

The 20 year old was instrumental in knocking Manchester United out of this seasons Champions League. Basel beat the English champions 2-1 with Shaqiri grabbing both assists and was named Man of the Match. Basel were eventually knocked out in the next stage after being crushed by Bayern Munich. Shaqiri then scored again against Grasshoppers and a consolation goal for the Switzerland senior national team against Argentina in the 3-1 loss.

On 9 February 2012, Bayern Munich confirmed they had reached an agreement with FC Basel over the transfer of Shaqiri, for around £8,000,000, with the midfielder linking up with the German giants in the summer. Bayern’s sporting director, Christian Nerlinger, said "We are delighted that we have been able to sign Xherdan Shaqiri, one of the most coveted young talents in European football.”

Shaqiri is a very versatile and creative player who can provide or score goals from wide or in the centre. He has a very powerful direct shot and has already proven how dangerous he can be to big teams. Shaqiri has already earned a move to one of Europe’s elite and he will hope he can continue his fantastic domestic and national career.
