Wembley FC to begin FA Cup journey
Football broadcasting history will be made this weekend as non-league Wembley FC will compete in an Extra Preliminary FA Cup tie; the first to be shown live on television as ex-players Ray Parlour, Martin Keown, Graeme Le Saux, Claudio Caniggia and Brian McBride take one last shot at competing in order to get the Combined Counties Premier Division side into the first round proper.
Also under the wing of new technical director and former England manager Terry Venables, who was unveiled in the role earlier this year, Wembley FC will battle it out against Langford FC at their Vale Farm home where a record gate attendance is expected.
This unique situation arose earlier this year whereby American beer conglomerate Budweiser signalled their commitment to the FA Cup in this country by extending their reach to the very grassroots level in Wembley FC.
Wembley is a name synonymous with the FA Cup and played a major part in Venables’ decision making to initially undertake the role in a region close to his heart, before he managed to convince the old stagers to join the bandwagon.
Venables said: “The FA Cup holds some very special memories for me, from my time as both a player and manager.
“The new boys coming in have a wealth of experience at the very highest level and people like Ray Parlour have the FA Cup winner medals to prove it.
“That can only help the lads here and shine a light on the importance of grassroots football here in the UK and around the world.”
To further champion the exploits of Venables and his band of ex-players, Wembley FC’s FA Cup journey will be part of an ESPN documentary – ‘Dream On’ which will be aired on Thursday, August 16 at 22:00 GMT whereby the eight part series will provide an eye opener to the everyday life of the non-league and the initial realisations that these stellar names were set to arrive.
Wembley will be hoping they don’t fall at the first hurdle against Langford with the added exposure reaching as far as the Internet too with a live stream being available via Budweiser’s Facebook page and at www.BudUnited.com.
Anticipating the first battle, Brian Gumm said: “We know the local community of Wembley has been hotly anticipating this tie since the draw was made and we announced the legends eligibility at a press conference back in June.
“We’re looking forward to our fans turning up on Saturday to share what will be a brilliant moment in this club’s history.”
