Clinical Roberts spearheads Reading's push to the top

Jason Roberts' dream start to life at the Madejski Stadium continued as he inspired Reading to an eighth consecutive victory, to leave the Royals within striking distance of the Championship summit.

The evergreen striker added Reading's second in a 3-1 home win against Leicester City, either side of Mikele Leigertwood's stunning opener and Simon Church's header. With three goals and three assists since joining from Blackburn Rovers, Roberts' contribution is there for all to see.

Roberts has now won his first seven games at his new club. Reading boss Brian McDermott was delighted with his side's performance, hinting that they have found the formula which spearheaded their late push for the play-offs last season.

He said: "I really enjoyed it, I thought it was rocking in here today. First half, we could have been more than 2-0 up, we had a few cleared off the line.

"Those guys, they know how to win, they know what's required. Sometimes you have to stay in games when other teams are in charge. You have to get the little details right, and they do", he added.

The result saw Reading draw level on points with second-placed West Ham, who were held to a 1-1 draw at home to Doncaster. The meeting between the two sides at Upton Park on March 31 will prove a pivotal fixture in the battle for automatic promotion.
