Hammers hanging on in

West Ham are not prepared to hand second placed to Reading on a plate.

On Tuesday night they closed the gap on the Royals to a solitary point thanks to a 2-0 win at Peterborough.

The top three sides in the Championship have now all played 39 games. Southampton lead the way with 78 points, with Reading five points adrift.

The Hammers are locked in a battle with Reading for the second automatic promotion spot, with fourth-placed Brighton 10 points adrift of the Londoners.

West Ham’s win at Peterborough also means they have a better goal difference than the Royals, albeit just one goal better off at plus 23, compared to plus 22 for the Berkshire club.

It took 51 minutes for a Ricardo Vaz Te header to break down the Posh defences, before Gary O’Neill’s 25 yarder in the 57th minute secured victory.
