Charlton take a giant step towards promotion

Charlton Athletic took a huge step towards promotion on Saturday as they beat second-placed Sheffield United at The Valley.

Victory for the table toppers saw them go seven points clear of the Blades in League One, and they still have a game in hand on their rivals.

The Addicks' 1-0 win at Hillsborough last weekend took the Londoners eight points clear of Sheffield Wednesday.

With plenty of games still left to go until the end of the season, Charlton boss Chris Powell is refusing to admit that a victory would almost guarantee promotion.

These are wise words from the rookie manager, who is certainly enjoying his full season in charge of the Addicks, and is cementing his reputation as a club legend.

Crowds are growing larger in SE7 as Charlton look to secure promotion to the Championship. There is a feel good factor around the club at the moment with fans and players alike.

Charlton have been boosted by the news that talented young right back Chris Solly has signed a contract extension that will keep him at the club until 2014 at least.

Bradley Wright-Phillips (pictured), Charlton’s top scorer this season, will also be awarded a new contract after appearing in his 25th game of the season, with a clause in his contract kicking in.
