Pompey bring in 10 new faces
Portsmouth’s woes may have been eased following the signing of 10 new squad members, but only on a short-term basis.
Ex-Reading midfielder Brian Howard will take the captain's armband and become Pompey skipper, he joins the financially challenged club along with Izale McLeod, Lee Williamson, Jon Harley, Mustapha Dumbuya, Kieran Djilali, Luke Rodgers, Liam Walker, Jack Compton and Simon Eastwood.
All 10 have signed one-month contracts at Fratton Park, meaning there’s still speculation and doubts to whether they will continue to play for the club after their contracts expire.
With additional worries regard whether Pompey will be able to afford to pay their salaries throughout the season and whether they can keep the squad satisfied with life at Portsmouth.
Manager Michael Appleton (pictured) remains upbeat about the situation. He said: “They are just one-month contract, that is all we can do because of the risk to both parties at the minute.
“But it’s fantastic for the players, many of which have been training with us for four weeks, but there is still a fantastic spirit and they can’t wait to play.”
The future of Portsmouth remains uncertain, recently former owner Balram Chainrai withdrew his offer to buy the club. The ever jubilant Pompey Supporters’ Trust remain hopeful of completing a takeover sooner rather than later to bring them out of administration and to avoid the club starting with a 10-point deduction.
A tough season in League One lays ahead not just for the players and coaches, but for everyone involved with Portsmouth Football Club.
