Scan confirms Lampard will miss Euro 2012

Frank Lampard will miss Euro 2012 after scans on Thursday revealed the severity of a thigh injury sustained on Wednesday.

Liverpool's Jordan Henderson will be called up as a replacement subject to clearance from UEFA.

England manager Roy Hodgson said: "It's a huge blow for the team after the loss of another senior player in Gareth Barry - I'm especially disappointed for Frank.

"The fact that the doctor cannot guarantee Frank could take part in any of the group matches means we have to replace him in the central midfield area".

Ironically, 90-cap Lampard is just the sort of player that his replacement Henderson could learn from on the big stage.

Lampard's experience, and more importantly the good form he would have taken into the tournament will be sorely missed in and around the team.

Henderson's call-up will make Liverpool the most represented side in the England squad with a total of five - unthinkable after an eighth-place finish in the Premier League.

The pressure will be on Henderson along with Andy Carroll and Stewart Downing - who cost a combined £70m - to produce the form that deserted them all season to ex-Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish's cost.
