Smalling ruled out of Euro 2012

Chris Smalling has been ruled out of England's Euro 2012 campaign in June due to a torn groin muscle.

The Manchester United defender picked up the injury at Swansea City last weekend, and many tipped the former Fulham star to take his place in Roy Hodgson's 23-man squad.

The 22-year-old can play at either right back or in central defence and would have provided the new England manager with options in the Three Lions' rearguard.

Smalling will now look to regain full fitness ahead of the new 2012/13 Premier League season and also the 2014 World Cup qualifying matches, which start in September.
