Thigh injury threatens to ruin Lampard's Euro 2012

England's Euro 2012 preparations were dealt another blow on Wednesday as Frank Lampard suffered a thigh injury during training and had to withdraw from the session.

An FA statement read: "Frank Lampard has pulled up in training with a thigh injury - he will now have a scan and be assessed by the England medical team tomorrow [Thursday]."

Liverpool's Jordan Henderson has been put on standby notice in the event of a full withdrawal having missed out to Everton's Phil Jagielka when a replacement for Gareth Barry was required earlier this week.

Lampard's place in the England squad has never been doubted but a starting spot has come under scrutiny after Fabio Capello dropped the midfielder against Bulgaria last September.

Having found his place under threat at club level under Andre Villas-Boas, Lampard fought back strongly to play a key role in Chelsea's successful end of season.

Withdrawal will be especially tough to take for 33-year-old Lampard - Euro 2012 more than probably represents his last hurrah for England.
