Anorthosis kicked out of Europa League
Cypriot side Anorthosis Famagusta have been eliminated by UEFA from the Europa League after crowd trouble forced their home qualification leg to be abandoned on August 9.
Anorthosis Famagusta from the Greek side of Cyprus took a 1-0 advantage into the third qualifying round second leg against Georgia’s Dila Gori.
But after going 3-0 down in the return fixture the home fans became violent, invaded the pitch and pelted police with missiles.
Along with elimination from this season’s Europa League, UEFA have fined the Cypriot team around 50,000 Euros and ordered them to play their next three UEFA club competition fixtures behind closed doors.
A 20-year-old Anorthosis fan has been jailed for four months by a Cypriot court following the violence.
The man was amongst a group of youths protesting at the poor performance from their side during the fixture at the Papadopoulos stadium in Larnaca.
In the 78th minute, Dila skipper Lasha Salukvadze extended their advantage to 2-0 which sparked the problems.
After seeing their side's advantage slip away, it went from bad to worse for Anorthosis as midfielder Vincent Laban was sent off just before Dila scored their third goal.
Dila will now play Portugal's CS Marítimo in the play-off round.
