Caniggia scores on Wembley FC debut
Claudio Caniggia scored at the age of 45 on his Wembley FC debut as the non-league side beat Langford 3-2 in the FA Cup extra preliminary round on Saturday.
Wembley lined up with a host of veteran stars, including Graeme Le Saux and Ray Parlour, as well as former USA striker Brian McBride.
Terry Venables, the guest manager for the day, also selected Caniggia, who was part of the Argentina squad that reached the 1990 World Cup final, in his starting 11.
On 13 minutes, Caniggia (pictured) broke the deadlock after he ran on to a through ball and slotted home.
Spartan South Midlands League Division One side Langford equalised in the 31st minute.
Cherry Red Records Combined Counties League Premier Division outfit Wembley opened up a 3-1 advantage courtesy of two goals from Daryl Atkins. The visitors struck again, but Wembley held on for a famous win.
"This is right up there with anything I have done," said Atkins. "I was playing pub football before this, so to be on the same pitch as these great players was immense and amazing. We all played to the best we can because of it. Hopefully we can have a good run in the FA Cup now."
Wembley will field a number of former stars again when they take on Uxbridge in the preliminary round.
