Falcao hat-trick embarrasses Chelsea in Super Cup
Chelsea 1 Atletico Madrid 4
Friday, August 31 - Stade Louis II stadium, Monaco
Chelsea goal: Cahill 74
Atletico goals: Falcao 6, 19, 45, Miranda 60
Champions League and FA Cup winning manager Roberto Di Matteo tasted his first cup defeat as Chelsea boss, as the Blues were undone by a Radamel Falcao first half hat-trick in Friday night's Super Cup clash with Atletico Madrid in Monaco.
"We had a very slow start and we conceded two goals within 20 minutes," said Di Matteo. "We conceded too much space. It's something that's been a little bit of our game, to be hard to beat but tonight, that certainly wasn't the case.
"We never really got into the game, so that's the most disappointing aspect. We conceded a bit too much space to Atletico Madrid, especially a player like Falcao. You cannot give him space."
Falcao was too clever for the Chelsea defence as the Champions League winners were outclassed by the Europa League champions.
He fired a shot against the crossbar before dinking in a superb first goal past keeper Petr Cech in the sixth minute, and doubled Atletico's lead in the 19th minute when he curled in a shot.
The game was all but over just before half-time when Falcao finished off a counter attack move with a well taken strike.
Miranda made it 4-0 15 minutes into the second half, before Gary Cahill crashed in a consolation goal for Chelsea late on.
