Japan close, but no cigar

Japan missed a penalty in the second half as they squandered an opportunity to become the first team to qualify for the 2014 World Cup finals in Brazil.

They lost 2-1 against Jordan in Amman, despite dominating their game against Jordan in Amman and creating some good chances.

Jordan took the lead in first half stoppage time and extended their advantage on the hour, but Manchester United star Shinji Kagawa (pictured) replied in the 69th minute, only for Yasuhito Endo to be denied an equaliser when his penalty was saved by Amer Sabbah.

Japan are top of Group B in the AFC World Cup qualifiers with 13 points and just two games remaining, with Jordan second on seven points.

Australia, who were held to a 2-2 draw against Oman, are a point further back in third place with a game in hand.
