PSG defeat Man City EDS side
Manchester City's Elite Development Squad got off to a rocky start in the NextGen Series on Thursday evening at Hyde FC, as they were beaten 2-0 by an impressive looking Paris Saint Germain.
The Sky Blues youth side created enough chances to earn at least a draw from the game but City were undone by two goals from PSG’s young No.9 Nicholas Rasjel.
PSG have a very technically talented young squad, something the City coaching staff must have been aware of, City looked to restrict the visitors from settling on the ball and not allowing them to get into their familiar rhythm.
The visitors took the lead on the half-hour mark after a mistake from George Evans, allowing Rasjel to slot home past keeper Ian Lawlor.
Rasjel grabbed his second which 12 minutes to play, after some slick build-up play from the French side he finishing neatly with the outside of his foot to effectively end the contest.
City’s midfield done well to contain the Parisians for most of the game and carved out a few good chances, midfield quartet Denis Suarez, Albert Rusnak, Marcos Lopes and Emyr Huws put in impressive shifts but unfortunately couldn’t secure the win.
'The Champions League of youth football'
For those who don’t know much about the NextGen Series, it has been dubbed the Champions League of youth football, 24 youth teams from around Europe will take part in the competitions including six Premier League Teams.
Representing the Premier League and the English youth system are Arsenal, Aston Villa, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City, Tottenham Hotspur and Celtic.
The tournament has been designed to further develop youth talent by exposing them to European football which is likely to provide important experience for the stars of tomorrow.
Tournament rules dictate teams must include players ages 18 and below with the exception of three players aged between 18 and 19.
City’s EDS coach Attilio Lombardo will be looking for significant improvement for their next clash and there may be a few changes to the squad.
City will face Turkish side Fenerbahce next at Hyde FC and will be searching for their first win in the competition, on September 13.
