Royals go six points clear of West Ham in race for automatic promotion

Reading drew level on points with Southampton at the top of the Championship with a 1-0 win at Brighton on Tuesday.

The result takes the Royals six points clear of third-placed West Ham with four games to play, which means that Brian McDermott's side will secure automatic promotion if they pick up seven points from their last four games - even if the Hammers win all of their remaining games.

Leaders Southampton - who entertain the Royals on Friday night - face the same scenario, although they have a superior goal difference compared to Reading and West Ham.

Ian Harte's free-kick in the 14th minute made it 13 wins and a draw for the Royals in their last 15 games, but it needed a second half penalty save from Adam Federici to secure maximum points for the visitors, as he kept out Ashley Barnes' effort, after Barnes had been fouled by Alex Pearce.

In Tuesday's other Championship game, Millwall won 1-0 at Portsmouth courtesy of Harry Kane's 37th minute strike.
