Livermore included in experimental England squad

Roy Hodgson has named Tottenham Hotspur's 22-year-old midfielder Jake Livermore in his England squad for the friendly against Italy on Wednesday in Berne.

Livermore (pictured), who made 38 appearances during his breakout season at White Hart Lane is the surprise name in a squad without many of its regular names.

Hodgson has also included five members of Team GB's Olympics squad who reached the quarter-finals before losing to South Korea on penalties.

Chelsea duo Ryan Bertrand and Daniel Sturridge, Manchester United midfielder Tom Cleverley, Birmingham goalkeeper Jack Butland and Spurs defender Steven Caulker are the five, whilst uncapped Norwich keeper John Ruddy - who missed Euro 2012 with a broken finger - is also included, as is Everton's Jack Rodwell.

Three other injury absentees from Euro 2012 - Kyle Walker, Gary Cahill and Frank Lampard - have also returned to the squad and there is a place for Manchester City winger Adam Johnson.

Perhaps of biggest surprise however is the recall of Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick.

The 31-year-old has been recalled to the squad, despite having asked to not be considered for international duty in January 2011, having not featured at the 2010 World Cup.

Nonetheless, in a squad shorn of regular central midfielders Scott Parker and Gareth Barry (injured) and Steven Gerrard, Carrick has been included, and given his previous protestations, is likely to start the match against the European Championship finalists.

Other notable absentees for England include the starting back-four from the Euro 2012 campaign - Glen Johnson, John Terry, Joleon Lescott and Ashley Cole - as well as Manchester United forwards Wayne Rooney and Danny Welbeck, as Hodgson looks to experiement.

Andy Carroll, seemingly not wanted by his club Liverpool, is included in the squad, as is the exciting Arsenal midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.
